Ontario Workers Face Threats from Proposed U.S. Tariffs

Ontario’s main opposition party has condemned U.S. president-elect Donald Trump’s tariff threats as an “existential threat” to the province’s workers. During a visit to Windsor on Monday, NDP Leader Marit Stiles, alongside other local NDP leaders and union representatives, addressed these concerns at the Unifor Local 444/200 union hall.

Stiles criticized Premier Doug Ford for focusing on election-related matters rather than collaborating on strategies to protect Ontario’s workers. “This is a terrible position for us to be in, facing down a threat like we are facing right now, which is an existential threat to Ontario jobs and to Canadian sovereignty,” Stiles stated during the press conference.

She called for the Ford government to bring back the provincial legislature and work with all parties to develop a plan to safeguard jobs. Trump’s threats to impose a universal 25 percent tariff on Canadian and Mexican imports, coupled with comments favoring domestic production in Detroit over existing cross-border supply chains, have sparked significant concern, particularly in Windsor’s automotive industry.

MP Brian Masse (NDP — Windsor West) highlighted the unpredictability of the situation: “Right now, it’s almost like a whack-a-mole in terms of assessing what Trump might put a tariff on or not. We don’t know if other sectors are going to be left alone, so we have to come up with a more robust plan. It’s hard to really understand what the repercussions would be, but what we can do is control some of our responses in a better, organized way.”

The potential ripple effects extend beyond the automotive industry. MPP Lisa Gretzky (NDP — Windsor West) warned of the consequences for the region’s agricultural sector. “When you’re adding tariffs and you’re making it more difficult for them to get their product to market, we’re going to look at even higher costs of food on our side,” she said.

Additionally, the issue of government transparency was raised during the event. Ontario’s Information and Privacy Commissioner ruled that records from Premier Ford’s personal phone, allegedly used for government business, should be made public. Stiles stated that this decision is a positive step toward accountability, criticizing the government’s history of secrecy, including the use of “secret code words” and “accidental” data wipes.

The NDP emphasized the urgency of collective action to protect Ontario workers. They expressed readiness to collaborate on any measures necessary to safeguard jobs, maintain economic stability, and counteract the potential fallout from U.S. tariffs.

“Doug Ford doesn’t need to go to the polls to address these issues,” Stiles remarked. “What’s needed is leadership, cooperation, and a commitment to prioritize Ontario workers and their families.”

The threats posed by these tariffs underscore the importance of proactive planning and transparent governance to ensure Ontario’s workforce and economy remain resilient in the face of external pressures.
